Mesothelioma Widow Gets Six-Figure Compensation

The widow of a mesothelioma victim has won a six-figure sum in compensation after her husband was exposed to asbestos at work.

Ronald Rumney had worked for British Nuclear Fuels at Sellafield as an electrician from 1960 until his retirement in 1994.

Mr Rumney, 71, who had previously been fit and healthy, visited his doctor in early 2007 with flu-like symptoms. He was diagnosed with the lung disease, mesothelioma, and told he had only weeks to live. He knew immediately that he must have developed the disease because he had been exposed to asbestos dust in the course of his employment.

Mr Rumney died just three weeks after his diagnosis.

Mesothelioma is a particularly lethal form of cancer that attacks the cells lining the body's internal organs, but it is most often found in the lungs. The prognosis for sufferers is very poor. As in Mr Rumney’s case, by the time someone has symptoms and goes to their doctor, the disease is very often advanced. Unfortunately, stricter controls over the use of asbestos were not introduced until the late 1960s, so many workers were exposed to the deadly substance before that time and claims by victims of mesothelioma are continuing to lead to substantial settlements by the responsible past employers.

Mr Rumney's widow received an undisclosed six-figure amount in compensation.
