A retired docker has received £23,500.00 compensation from the Port of London Authority after being diagnosed as suffering from asbestos related pleural disease. Unite, Britain’s largest union, secured the compensation for Ronald Hyde in association with specialist personal injury solicitors, Pattinson & Brewer.
Mr Hyde, now aged 72, from Hatfield Peverel, Essex worked for the Port of London Authority at the West India Dock in London from 1965 until 1969. He worked in the holds of ships unloading asbestos cargoes which were imported into the docks.
Mr Hyde says:-
"I was diagnosed as suffering from asbestosis, asbestos related pleural thickening and pleural plaques following a CT scan. I was very shaken by this diagnosis. Of course I was aware that I had worked with asbestos in the past but to be honest, I thought that I had dodged any serious illness. I have had friends who have died from asbestos related illnesses and I am very aware of the terrible problems that asbestos exposure can cause."
Mr Hyde’s solicitor, Paul Meehan, from Pattinson & Brewer Solicitors says:-
"Mr Hyde was never warned by his employers of the dangers of working with asbestos. He was not provided with any protective equipment to prevent exposure to asbestos. Had the necessary safeguards been taken by his employers, Mr Hyde would not have suffered from this terrible disease.
